"I" is for Ice Cream!

July 24, 2008

Being that it was "I" Day today, making ice cream was an obvious and popular choice!

The kids got to make their own ice cream and had fun mixing the ingredients.

Then it was time to toss the plastic bag back and forth to make the ice cream.

Both kids gave it a "thumbs up"!

Here's our recipe for Speedy Ice Cream:

1 cup half-and-half cream
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

4 cups coarsely crushed ice cubes
3/4 cup salt (we used rock salt)

Directions:
In a small resealable plastic bag, combine the cream, sugar and vanilla. Press out air and seal. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the ice and salt; add the sealed small bag. Seal the large bag; place in another large resealable bag plastic bag and seal. Shake and knead for 5-7 minutes or until cream mixture is thickened. Serve immediately or freeze.

Considering how short my son's perseverance was when we turned cream into butter, I'm pretty sure I'd be out in the yard tossing a bag of ice cream ingredients to myself... I do love a bowl of homemade ice cream, though, so maybe it would be worth it. :) Thanks for the recipe!
